About This Trail
Following atop earthen levees that contain managed wetland pools, this trail offers outstanding wildlife viewing in the heart of Louisiana’s coastal prairie. The refuge hosts enormous concentrations of wintering waterfowl, and alligators are commonly spotted basking on the levees. The flat, open terrain provides panoramic views across the marsh, and the lack of shade makes early morning or late afternoon visits most pleasant during warmer months.
Getting There
From Lake Arthur, take LA-14 west approximately 5 miles to the Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge headquarters. Check in at the visitor contact station for current conditions, then continue to the Pool Loop trailhead at the end of the refuge road.
