About This Trail

Lake Kissimmee State Park preserves a landscape that echoes with the history of Florida’s cow hunters, the hardy cattlemen who worked the prairies before the term ‘cowboy’ existed. The trail system explores diverse habitats including pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and the shores of three lakes where alligators patrol and ospreys nest. The park’s observation tower provides sweeping views across the Kissimmee Prairie, where cattle once roamed in vast herds. Living history programs recreate the 1876 cow camp experience, with interpreters demonstrating the skills and lifestyle of Florida’s original cowboys. The Buster Island Loop and North Loop trails offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities, while the entire park provides excellent birding for both residents and migrants.
