About This Trail
Limestone Cove Trail explores one of the richest cove hardwood forests in the Unaka Mountain region, where the underlying limestone creates soil conditions supporting exceptional plant diversity. The trail passes through towering tulip poplars, white basswoods, and sugar maples, with an understory rich in wildflowers, ferns, and rare plant species. Spring brings an incredible wildflower display, including trilliums, bloodroot, hepatica, and many others that thrive in the calcium-rich soil. The trail follows an old logging road grade, making for easy walking through this botanical treasure. Birding is excellent throughout the year, with neotropical migrants abundant during spring and fall.
