About This Trail
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge shares its boundaries with Kennedy Space Center, creating a unique juxtaposition of cutting-edge technology and pristine wilderness. The refuge protects 140,000 acres of diverse habitats supporting over 1,500 plant and animal species, including endangered manatees, sea turtles, and Florida scrub-jays. The Black Point Wildlife Drive and associated trails wind through impoundments where wading birds congregate in remarkable numbers, while the Cruickshank Trail provides access to prime manatee viewing areas. The refuge’s location makes it possible to observe wildlife while rockets launch in the background—a truly unique Florida experience. Winter months bring migratory waterfowl by the thousands, making this one of the premier birding destinations in the eastern United States.
