About This Trail

Moundville Archaeological Park preserves one of the most significant Native American sites in North America, the remains of a sophisticated Mississippian culture city that thrived from 1000 to 1450 AD. The nature trail winds among massive ceremonial mounds, the largest rising 60 feet above the surrounding plaza, while interpretive signs explain the remarkable culture that built this complex. The trail continues along the Black Warrior River through forests that have reclaimed the ancient city, creating a contemplative atmosphere. The park’s museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts, including the famous Rattlesnake Disk. This trail offers a profound connection to Alabama’s deep human history, revealing a civilization as sophisticated as any in the Americas.
