About This Trail
At 6,684 feet, Mount Mitchell is the highest point east of the Mississippi River. While a paved trail from the parking area reaches the summit in minutes, the observation tower offers 360-degree views across the Black Mountain range and beyond. More adventurous hikers can approach via several longer trails through the spruce-fir forest.
Getting There
From the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 355.4, take NC-128 north for 5 miles to Mount Mitchell State Park.
