About This Trail
Mount Rogers stands as Virginia’s highest point at 5,729 feet, and the trail to its summit passes through some of the state’s most remarkable high-country scenery. The most popular route traverses Grayson Highlands State Park, where wild ponies graze on grass balds with spectacular mountain views. The summit itself lies in a dense spruce-fir forest that feels transported from New England, providing a unique ecosystem at this southern latitude. While the summit lacks views due to the forest cover, the journey through open balds, highland meadows, and primeval forest makes this one of Virginia’s finest hikes. The Appalachian Trail crosses the mountain, allowing for varied loop routes of different lengths.
