About This Trail

The Dugger Mountain Wilderness section of the Pinhoti Trail traverses one of Alabama’s most remote and pristine mountain landscapes. The trail follows the ridgeline through forest of oak, hickory, and pine, with periodic openings that reveal views of surrounding valleys and distant peaks. Dugger Mountain’s wilderness designation ensures minimal development and maximum solitude—this is genuine backcountry hiking far from crowds and amenities. The Pinhoti Trail stretches over 300 miles from Alabama to Georgia’s Appalachian Trail, and this section offers an excellent taste of long-distance hiking without requiring a multi-day commitment. Spring wildflowers and fall foliage are particularly rewarding, while summer brings lush green canopies and cooling breezes at elevation.
