About This Trail
The Shoal Creek section of the Pinhoti Trail follows a scenic mountain creek through the Talladega National Forest, offering a gentler alternative to the more strenuous ridgeline sections. The trail crosses the creek multiple times, passing cascades, deep pools, and rock formations along the way. Lush rhododendron and mountain laurel line the creek banks, creating tunnel-like passages in places. The diverse riparian habitat supports abundant wildlife, including numerous bird species and the occasional deer or turkey. This section works well as a moderate day hike or as part of a longer Pinhoti Trail adventure. Water shoes or hiking sandals are recommended for the numerous creek crossings, especially after rain.
