About This Trail
Pinnacle Overlook Trail climbs to one of the most historic viewpoints in America, overlooking Cumberland Gap—the mountain pass that served as the gateway to the western frontier. From the 2,440-foot summit, views extend into Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee, encompassing the same landscape that Daniel Boone and thousands of pioneers viewed as they passed through the gap. The trail ascends steadily through forest, with interpretive signs explaining the area’s natural and human history. The Pinnacle has been a destination since before the Civil War, and the views remain as spectacular today as when the first explorers gazed westward.
