About This Trail

Providence Canyon State Outdoor Recreation Area protects a geological wonder—massive gullies carved by erosion into the Georgia Piedmont, exposing layers of multicolored clay and sand that rival the palette of the American Southwest. The Canyon Loop Trail circles the rim and descends into the canyon floor, where hikers walk among towering walls of pink, orange, purple, and white sediments. This human-caused canyon, created by poor farming practices in the 1800s, has become one of Georgia’s most unique natural attractions. Spring brings wildflowers including rare plumleaf azaleas found nowhere else on Earth, while autumn light dramatically illuminates the canyon walls. Rangers recommend staying on designated trails to prevent further erosion and protect the fragile formations.
