About This Trail
Rattlesnake Ridge Trail climbs through the Unaka Mountain Wilderness, following a prominent ridge to high elevation viewpoints overlooking the Nolichucky River Valley. The trail is named for the rocky outcrops along the ridge where timber rattlesnakes are occasionally encountered, though sightings are rare. The forest transitions from cove hardwoods at lower elevations to northern hardwoods and spruce near the summit ridge. This strenuous trail rewards determined hikers with outstanding views and a true wilderness experience. The Unaka Mountain Wilderness is one of Tennessee’s newest wilderness areas, protecting rugged mountain terrain and providing habitat for diverse wildlife including black bear and wild turkey.
