About This Trail

Red Mountain Park preserves the landscape of Birmingham’s iron ore mining industry, transforming abandoned mine sites into a unique recreational area. The Ishkooda Trail explores this fascinating industrial heritage, passing ore pits, mine shafts, and the remains of processing facilities that fueled Birmingham’s growth as an industrial center. The trail’s name honors the Ishkooda Mine, once one of the region’s most productive operations. Beyond the historical features, the park’s forests have recovered remarkably, supporting diverse wildlife and wildflower communities. Overlooks provide views of the surrounding terrain and glimpses of the Vulcan statue on nearby Red Mountain. This trail offers a thought-provoking combination of industrial history and natural recovery.
