About This Trail
Red Top Mountain State Park on Lake Allatoona offers miles of trails through forests that once echoed with the sounds of iron ore mining. The Iron Hill Trail explores this industrial heritage while providing scenic views of the lake and surrounding hills. The trail’s name comes from the red soil—stained by iron oxide—that characterizes the area and gave the mountain its name. The route passes historic mining sites, climbs to overlooks of Lake Allatoona’s blue waters, and winds through recovering forests of pine and hardwood. Spring wildflowers carpet the forest floor, while autumn brings spectacular color to the diverse tree canopy. The trail can be combined with other park trails for longer explorations.
