About This Trail

The Rhododendron Gardens Trail winds through the largest natural rhododendron garden in the world, located near the summit of Roan Mountain. During peak bloom in mid-June, over 600 acres of Catawba rhododendrons burst into brilliant pink and purple flowers, creating one of the most spectacular natural displays anywhere. The paved trail provides easy access to viewpoints and garden areas, making this suitable for visitors of all abilities. Beyond the rhododendrons, the trail offers views of the surrounding highlands and access to the historic Cloudland Trail. The gardens have been a tourist attraction since the late 1800s when the Cloudland Hotel welcomed visitors to experience the blooms.
