River Trail - Pipestem
Steep descent through forest to the Bluestone River.
About This Trail
The River Trail at Pipestem Resort State Park descends over 1,000 feet from the canyon rim to the Bluestone River below, providing a challenging hike through diverse forest communities. The trail switchbacks down the steep canyon wall, passing through several distinct forest zones as elevation decreases. Views of the canyon open through the trees, and the increasingly lush forest near the river provides welcome shade. At the bottom, the Bluestone River offers fishing, swimming, and access to the Mountain Creek Lodge, reachable only by trail or aerial tram. The return climb is strenuous but rewarding.
