Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve protects 1,038 acres of urban wilderness within Birmingham city limits, offering a remarkable outdoor escape in the heart of Alabama’s largest city. The trail system winds through forests reclaiming former iron ore mining sites, past historic quarries and mine shafts, and to overlooks with panoramic views of downtown Birmingham. Interpretive signs explain the area’s industrial heritage and ecological recovery. The diverse habitats support surprising wildlife populations, including deer, coyotes, and numerous bird species. Spring wildflowers are exceptional, and the fall color display rivals rural areas. This preserve demonstrates nature’s resilience and provides essential green space for Birmingham residents seeking wilderness close to home.

Getting There

From downtown Birmingham, take I-20 east to Exit 132 for 81st Street South. Turn south and continue to 81st Street. Turn left onto Ruffner Road and continue to the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center. The trailhead is located behind the nature center building.
