About This Trail

Shark Valley provides a unique perspective on the vast Everglades sawgrass prairie, with a paved loop road and trail leading to a 65-foot observation tower offering panoramic views of the ‘River of Grass’ stretching to every horizon. The trail follows an old oil exploration road through the heart of the Shark River Slough, where alligators line the path in impressive numbers, especially during dry season. Great blue herons, purple gallinules, and soft-shell turtles are common sights, while lucky visitors might spot rare snail kites hunting apple snails. Tram tours provide narrated access for those preferring not to walk the full loop, while bicyclists and hikers can explore at their own pace. The observation tower views reveal the true scale of this watery wilderness.
