About This Trail
Sharp Top is the most recognizable of the Peaks of Otter, its distinctive conical shape rising prominently along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The steep trail climbs through hardwood forest to a rocky summit with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, Abbott Lake far below, and the rolling Piedmont stretching eastward. The summit’s stone shelter, built by the CCC in the 1930s, provides refuge from weather and a gathering point for hikers savoring the views. A shuttle bus offers alternative access for those unable to make the climb. The combination of the parkway setting, accessible facilities, and spectacular summit views makes this one of Virginia’s most popular mountain hikes, though the steep grade ensures a genuine climbing experience.
