About This Trail

The Big Tree Loop in the Sipsey Wilderness leads to one of Alabama’s largest and oldest trees, a massive tulip poplar that has witnessed centuries of history. The trail winds through the wilderness area’s lush forest of towering hardwoods, crossing streams and passing rock formations before reaching the magnificent tree. The route also visits East Bee Branch Falls, a seasonal waterfall that flows impressively after rain. The Sipsey Wilderness is Alabama’s only federally designated wilderness area, protecting a landscape of deep gorges, old-growth forest remnants, and remarkably pristine streams. This trail provides an accessible introduction to the wilderness while showcasing some of its most impressive features.
