About This Trail

Hidden within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, Sope Creek Trail transports hikers from suburban Marietta to a world of cascading creeks, historic ruins, and refreshing swimming holes. The trail follows Sope Creek through a diverse forest of tulip poplars, oaks, and mountain laurel, passing the evocative stone ruins of the Marietta Paper Mill destroyed during the Civil War. During summer months, families gather at the creek’s rocky pools for wading and picnicking. The varied terrain includes gentle creek-side paths and moderately steep climbs through ravines, offering something for all skill levels. Interpretive signs along the route detail the area’s industrial past and ecological recovery.
