About This Trail

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens offers exceptional hiking through a combination of curated gardens and natural forest habitats along the Middle Oconee River. The White Trail follows the river bluffs through mature hardwood forest, descending to the water’s edge at several points and passing through diverse plant communities that showcase Georgia’s botanical heritage. Spring brings spectacular wildflower displays, while the International Garden and Flower Garden provide year-round color near the visitor center. The trail system is ideal for nature study, bird watching, and botanical photography. Unlike most state parks, dogs are not permitted on the trails to protect the garden’s plantings and wildlife. The visitor center offers exhibits, a gift shop, and educational programs.
