About This Trail

The Stephen C. Foster State Park boardwalk trail provides safe, elevated access into the heart of the Okefenokee Swamp, one of the largest intact freshwater ecosystems in North America. The boardwalk winds through cypress-tupelo swamp forest, past islands of longleaf pine, and over mirror-still black water where alligators, turtles, and wading birds are commonly spotted. Interpretive signs explain the swamp’s unique ecology and the history of human interaction with this vast wilderness. The protected walkway allows visitors to experience the swamp’s primordial atmosphere—the calls of sandhill cranes, the splash of fish, the ancient presence of massive cypress trees—without disturbing the fragile environment. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best wildlife viewing and photography opportunities.
