About This Trail

The Cherokee Trail circles the base of Stone Mountain, the massive granite monadnock that has been a Georgia landmark for thousands of years. This paved and natural surface loop passes through diverse forest habitats, crosses streams on rustic bridges, and offers constantly changing perspectives of the mountain’s imposing bulk. Along the way, hikers encounter historical markers explaining the mountain’s significance to Native Americans and its controversial Confederate carving. The trail connects with numerous other paths, including the Summit Trail for those wanting to tackle the steep climb to the top. Spring brings stunning displays of dogwood and redbud, while autumn paints the hardwoods in brilliant colors. The trail is suitable for all ages and can be combined with the park’s other attractions.
