About This Trail

The Three Ridges Loop offers one of Virginia’s finest wilderness backpacking experiences, though strong hikers can complete it as a challenging day hike. The circuit combines the Appalachian Trail, Mau-Har Trail, and Three Ridges Trail to traverse the Three Ridges Wilderness, passing Campbell Creek Falls, crossing multiple peaks, and providing spectacular views of the Tye River Valley and surrounding mountains. The terrain is demanding, with significant elevation gain and rocky footing, but the rewards include genuine wilderness solitude and diverse mountain scenery. Backcountry campsites allow for overnight adventures, while the loop’s length and difficulty ensure fewer crowds than more accessible trails. This is Virginia mountain hiking at its most challenging and rewarding.
