About This Trail
Tray Mountain offers one of the finest summit experiences along Georgia’s section of the Appalachian Trail. The trail winds through spectacular rhododendron tunnels that burst into bloom in late spring, creating natural archways of pink and white flowers. Mossy boulder fields, fern-draped forest floors, and trickling streams add to the magical atmosphere of the approach. The 4,430-foot summit provides sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with Brasstown Bald visible to the northwest and the peaks of the Smokies on the distant horizon. A primitive shelter near the summit accommodates backpackers, while day hikers can complete the round trip in a moderate half-day adventure. The mountain’s elevation supports a cooler microclimate that offers relief from summer heat.
