About This Trail

Turkey Pen Cove Trail leads through one of the most botanically diverse coves in the Sampson Mountain Wilderness. The trail follows an old settlers’ path through rich forest, passing remnants of homesteads including old rock walls and chimney remains. The cove’s sheltered position creates ideal conditions for diverse plant growth, including impressive displays of spring wildflowers. Wild turkeys are common in the area, giving the cove its name, and the forest also supports deer, grouse, and numerous songbirds. This moderate trail provides an excellent introduction to the Sampson Mountain Wilderness while connecting to other trails for extended adventures.
