About This Trail
This rugged connector trail links the Longleaf Vista area with the Backbone Trail, passing through mixed pine-hardwood forest with elevation changes uncommon in Louisiana. Named for the historic turpentine industry that once operated in these woods, the trail features sandstone outcrops, seasonal creek crossings, and overlooks of the surrounding wilderness. It’s an excellent option for creating longer loop hikes when combined with other trails in the system.
Getting There
From the Longleaf Vista Recreation Area parking lot, follow signs to the Turpentine Trail connector. Alternatively, access from the Backbone Trailhead on Forest Road 59 by hiking approximately 1.5 miles south to the junction.
