About This Trail
The Virginia Creeper Trail follows a former railroad grade from Whitetop Station to Abingdon, descending through 34 miles of spectacular mountain and valley scenery. Most visitors bike or hike the upper section from Whitetop to Damascus, a mostly downhill journey that crosses numerous trestle bridges, passes through tunnels of rhododendron, and follows tumbling mountain streams. The trail’s gentle grades make it accessible to all abilities, while the scenery rivals any mountain trail in the East. Shuttle services from Damascus allow one-way trips from Whitetop, the most popular option. The trail passes through the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, with opportunities to explore adjacent hiking trails. This is Virginia’s finest rail-trail, combining natural beauty with recreational accessibility.
