About This Trail
Walnut Mountain Trail climbs to the summit of Walnut Mountain in the Cherokee National Forest, offering panoramic views and access to remote backcountry campsites. The trail gains significant elevation through mature hardwood forest, with several switchbacks easing the climb. Near the summit, the forest opens to reveal views of the Great Smoky Mountains to the south and the Bald Mountains to the north. This trail provides excellent wildlife habitat, and hikers frequently encounter deer, wild turkey, and various woodland birds. The remote character of Walnut Mountain makes this an excellent destination for those seeking solitude.
