About This Trail

Weedon Island Preserve combines natural beauty with deep cultural history on a 3,000-acre coastal preserve in Tampa Bay. Elevated boardwalks wind through mangrove forests and over tidal flats where wading birds, dolphins, and manatees are commonly spotted. The preserve protects significant archaeological sites where Native Americans lived for thousands of years, and the cultural center provides context for this rich human history. Observation towers offer panoramic views of Tampa Bay and the surrounding wetlands. The diverse habitats—including upland hammocks, salt marshes, and mangrove islands—support remarkable biodiversity just minutes from downtown St. Petersburg. Sunset visits are particularly rewarding as the bay glows with warm light.
