About This Trail

This beloved trail leads to Whitaker Point, better known as Hawksbill Crag, one of the most photographed natural features in Arkansas. The dramatic rocky outcrop juts boldly over the Buffalo National River valley, offering breathtaking panoramic views of forested hills stretching to the horizon. The trail winds through lush hardwood forest carpeted with wildflowers in spring and ablaze with color in autumn. Arrive early on weekends to secure parking and enjoy the overlook before crowds gather.

Getting There

From Ponca, take AR-43 south for 0.5 miles and turn right onto Cave Mountain Road (CR 3600). Continue 5.5 miles, bearing right at the fork onto Hawksbill Crag Road (FR-1405). The trailhead parking area is at the end of the gravel road. The final miles are rough but passable for most vehicles in dry conditions.
