About This Trail
The Winding Stairs Trail offers a true backcountry experience in the Buffalo National River wilderness, with multiple creek crossings, steep terrain, and remote sections far from roads. The trail earns its name from steep, switchbacking sections that climb from valley bottoms to ridgetops. Solitude is nearly guaranteed, and the rugged character rewards experienced hikers seeking adventure beyond the popular trails. This is Buffalo River hiking at its most challenging and most rewarding.
Getting There
From Ponca, take AR-43 south to Boxley Valley Road. Continue through Boxley Valley and follow signs toward Steel Creek. The Winding Stairs Trailhead is accessible via forest roads from the Steel Creek area. A detailed map is recommended.
