About This Trail

Accessed from Carvers Gap on the Tennessee-North Carolina border, this trail traverses the longest grassy bald in the Appalachian Mountains at 6,189 feet. Round Bald, Jane Bald, and Grassy Ridge unfold with 360-degree views, flame azaleas, and rare Gray’s Lilies along what many call the AT’s most beautiful stretch.

Getting There

From Roan Mountain, take TN-143 south to Carvers Gap at the NC/TN border. Park in the lot at the gap and cross the highway to the Appalachian Trail heading south over Round Bald toward Grassy Ridge Bald.
