About This Trail
Limestone Sinks Trail is an easy 2-mile interpretive loop in the Cherokee National Forest of Monroe County, Tennessee, that explores a fascinating karst landscape where ancient limestone has dissolved to create unusual sinkholes and depressions. The well-maintained trail winds through a beautiful hardwood forest, passing several significant sinks that provide windows into the underground world of caves and subterranean streams. Interpretive signs explain the geological processes that created these formations over millions of years. The trail is accessible for most fitness levels, making it an excellent educational hike for families. Wildlife is abundant, with opportunities to spot deer, wild turkeys, and various songbirds. Spring wildflowers carpet the forest floor, and fall brings spectacular color to the canopy. This unique trail offers a different perspective on the diverse landscapes found in the Cherokee National Forest.
