About This Trail
North-South Trail (Tennessee Section) traverses 14 miles through the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in Stewart County, Tennessee, offering a gentle backpacking route through this unique peninsula between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. The fairly level terrain and well-marked path make this section accessible for beginning backpackers while still providing a true wilderness experience. The trail passes through diverse habitats including hardwood forests, open meadows, and wetland areas, supporting abundant wildlife including deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species. Several backcountry camping areas along the route allow for multi-day adventures. The trail connects to the Kentucky section for those seeking longer through-hikes. Spring wildflowers and fall foliage are highlights, while winter offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities when deciduous trees are bare.
