About This Trail

Ascending to Black Mountain at 4,145 feet, Kentucky’s highest point in Harlan County, this route follows an old gravel and broken-asphalt road gaining over 2,500 feet from the valley floor. Communication towers mark the summit, which is now state-owned and open to visitors without a waiver.

Getting There

From Harlan, KY, take US-421 south toward the Virginia border. The Black Mountain Trail is on the Kentucky side of the border in Harlan County, accessible via Forest Road off US-421 near the state line. High clearance vehicles recommended.
