About This Trail
Council of Trees Trail is a 1.7-mile moderate hike at Red Clay State Historic Park in Bradley County, Tennessee, connecting the Council House area to an overlook and picnic pavilion. This trail holds deep cultural significance as it traverses land that served as the last seat of Cherokee national government before the Trail of Tears removal in 1838. The path winds through a forest of ancient hardwoods, some of which may have witnessed the historic council meetings held here. One spur leads to an amphitheater used for cultural programs and events. The scenic overlook provides views of the surrounding hills and the sacred blue hole spring that drew the Cherokee to this location. Interpretive elements along the trail help visitors understand the profound historical importance of this site to Cherokee heritage.
