About This Trail

Starting from Compton Gap at Skyline Drive milepost 10.4, this short Appalachian Trail spur reaches towering split lava boulders up to 50 feet high. A narrow slot between the massive rocks creates a slot-canyon experience within Shenandoah National Park, all in under 30 minutes round-trip.

Getting There

From Front Royal, enter Shenandoah National Park and drive Skyline Drive to Milepost 10.4 at Compton Gap. From the parking area, follow the northbound Appalachian Trail 0.2 miles, then turn left onto the Dickey Ridge Trail to reach Fort Windham Rocks.
