About This Trail
Horse Trough Falls Trail is a moderately challenging 1.8-mile out-and-back hike in Union County, Georgia, that leads to a stunning 60-foot waterfall deep in the Chattahoochee National Forest. The trail descends through a beautiful mixed forest of hemlocks, rhododendrons, and hardwoods, with the sound of rushing water growing louder as you approach the falls. The waterfall gets its name from a rock formation at its base that resembles a horse trough. The path can be steep and rocky in places, requiring sturdy footwear and careful footing, especially after rain. Spring brings cascading wildflowers and peak water flow at the falls, while autumn offers spectacular foliage. The secluded nature of this trail means fewer crowds than more popular waterfalls in the area, providing a peaceful wilderness experience.
