About This Trail

Formerly called Dead Chief Trail, this 1.4-mile passage through the Ouachita Mountain foothills connects Gulpha Gorge Campground to Bathhouse Row. Named for former Hot Springs Reservation superintendent John Oertel, the moderate-to-steep trail intersects the Short Cut Trail leading to Hot Springs Mountain’s summit.

Getting There

From Hot Springs, take AR-7 south toward Lake Catherine State Park. The Oertel Trail is accessible from within Lake Catherine State Park off AR-171, near the Falls Creek Falls area.
