About This Trail

A 2.8-mile alternative route to Flying Mountain through a wooded valley on the quieter west side of Mount Desert Island in Acadia. The trail winds through mixed forest and connects to Acadia’s Valley Cove, with views of Somes Sound – the only fjord-like inlet on the U.S. Atlantic coast – and Fernald Cove from the ridgeline.

Getting There

From Southwest Harbor, take ME-102 north and turn east onto Fernald Point Road. Follow it 0.8 miles to the Flying Mountain trailhead parking area, which also serves the Valley Trail loop in Acadia National Park.
