About This Trail

An exploration through the iconic boulder garden of Smugglers Notch, where house-sized rock fragments create a maze of small caves and dramatic cold-air pockets. Cold air trapped between boulders preserves ice well into summer, in a notch historically used to smuggle goods to Canada during the 1807 Embargo Act.

Getting There

From Stowe, take VT-108 north through Smugglers Notch. The Ice Beds Trail begins along VT-108 in the notch area. Park at the designated pulloff near the trailhead on the east side of the road.
