About This Trail

Strenuous 5.9-mile climb gaining 1,900 feet to Split Rock, where two massive quartzite boulders frame panoramic views of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. Civil War fortifications line the ridge above Harpers Ferry. Accessible via the Appalachian Trail from Harpers Ferry National Historical Park’s train station.

Getting There

From Harpers Ferry, park at the train station and walk south on Potomac Street. Follow the Appalachian Trail across the Shenandoah River bridge and continue up Loudoun Heights to the blue-blazed trail to Split Rock.
