About This Trail

Starting from the cobbled streets of historic Lower Town and crossing the Potomac on the C&O Canal towpath, this 4.5-mile route climbs 1,079 feet to Maryland Heights’ famous overlook. Views frame Harpers Ferry between converging rivers and forested ridgelines. Interpretive signs detail Civil War and transportation history.

Getting There

From the Harpers Ferry Visitor Center, take the shuttle to Lower Town. Cross the footbridge over the Potomac and follow the C&O Canal Towpath upstream 0.3 miles to the Maryland Heights trailhead.
