About This Trail
Tearbritches Trail is a challenging 3-mile path in the Cohutta Wilderness of Gilmer County, Georgia, that connects East Cowpen Trail to Rough Ridge Trail. The trail gets its evocative name from the thick rhododendron and mountain laurel thickets that hikers must push through in places, though recent maintenance has improved conditions. The path climbs steadily through a diverse Appalachian forest, crossing several small streams and offering occasional views of the surrounding wilderness. Spring brings spectacular rhododendron blooms, while fall colors make the challenging trek worthwhile. The trail is best suited for experienced hikers due to its rugged terrain and navigation challenges. Wildlife sightings are common in this remote area, including deer, black bears, wild boar, and various bird species. For backpackers, this trail provides access to some of the most pristine wilderness in Georgia.
