Van Hook Trail
Short trail from Van Hook Campground to Cliffside Lake Recreation Area
About This Trail
Van Hook Trail is a pleasant 0.5-mile connector path in the Nantahala National Forest near Highlands, North Carolina, linking Van Hook Glade to Cliffside Lake Recreation Area. The trail winds through a beautiful Appalachian forest featuring rhododendrons, hemlocks, and diverse hardwoods. An additional 0.5-mile section follows the road to reach the scenic Cliffside Lake, where visitors can enjoy swimming, fishing, and picnicking. The easy terrain makes this an ideal family hike, and the lake destination provides a refreshing reward, especially on warm summer days. Wildflowers bloom along the path in spring, and fall brings spectacular foliage colors. The Van Hook Glade area offers additional trails and picnic facilities, making this an excellent base for exploring the Highlands Plateau region. This gentle trail provides easy access to some of the most beautiful high-elevation scenery in Western North Carolina.
