About This Trail

A short Appalachian Trail climb to the nation’s first completed monument to George Washington, a 40-foot stone tower built in 1827 on South Mountain’s Monument Knob. The summit offers broad views over the Cumberland Valley, with longer options extending to Annapolis Rock.

Getting There

From Boonsboro, take Alt Route 40 east approximately 4 miles to the top of South Mountain. Turn left on Washington Monument Road and continue 1 mile to the park entrance.
