About This Trail

A remote 8.4-mile climb along the Appalachian Trail in the 100-Mile Wilderness, ascending through Slugundy Gorge’s black-slate narrows to Barren Mountain’s summit lookout tower. The angular slate blocks of the Barren Slide lead to panoramic views over Moosehead Lake country, marking the first major peak AT thru-hikers encounter in the Wilderness.
