About This Trail

A 6.6-mile forest and river approach through the Hermitage, one of New England’s last stands of virgin old-growth white pine, into Gulf Hagas – dubbed the “Grand Canyon of Maine.” The trail follows the West Branch of the Pleasant River as it drops 400 feet through a 3-mile slate gorge past Jaws, Buttermilk Falls, and Billings Falls.

Getting There

From Brownville, take Route 11 north 8.1 miles, then turn left onto Katahdin Iron Works Road for 6.5 miles to the gatehouse. Cross the bridge, go right, and drive 5.5 miles to the Gulf Hagas parking area. A KI Jo-Mary access fee applies.
